GuelphToday received the following Letter to the Editor from a reader in response to LETTER: New library is 'unnecessary and financially wasteful' published on Nov. 1.

We've been talking about relocating the library since the 90s. People should be excited it's finally happening. Cities across the province and across the country have proven the benefits of new central libraries. They bring more people to the downtown, creating economic benefits and becoming centres for cultural activities. The four rounds of public engagement prior to the approval of the new library plans show that Guelphites are excited by these opportunities. They're excited about a new landmark that will invoke civic pride and support Guelph's diverse community.

Libraries are one of the few spaces left in society that are free to access and provide an equitable experience for users. They provide safe, warm, comfortable indoor spaces to spend a rainy afternoon. They offer free access to a wealth of knowledge and experiences through books, workshops, computers, and internet access. They provide opportunities for self-expression through makers-spaces and recording rooms.

If you care about youth, seniors, people with disabilities, the unhoused, single parents, and low-income families, then you should support the library. If you think a new library is a waste of money, I encourage you to actually use our libraries. You'll learn its value and realize the benefits of a new central branch. It's not a threat to the system; it's what the system requires to stay healthy.
