Tuesday morning fire destroys home in Rockwood (6 photos)

No injuries reported but crews remain on the scene hours later dealing with hot spots

ROCKWOOD – No injuries, but a house is a total loss after a Tuesday morning fire in Rockwood.

A residential structure fire was reported Tuesday morning just before 5 a.m. at 297 Main St. S. near Cobblestone Place and George Street East.

Guelph/Eramosa and Puslinch fire departments responded to the fire.

Guelph/Eramosa fire chief Jim Petrik said there were no injuries as nobody was inside the house at the time of the fire.

The house was still smoking after 11 a.m. It took a couple of hours to get the fire out and Petrik said firefighters were still dealing with hot spots throughout the structure.

Three firetrucks were still at the scene battling the fire.

Neighbour Brent Hutton was getting home at 5:30 a.m. and saw next door the house was on fire. He said he had heard someone walking by called 911 just before 5 a.m.

“The house is a total loss, so probably be about $500,000,” said Jim Petrik, chief Guelph/Eramosa Fire Department.

The fire chief said the fire was not suspicious and they are still determining the cause of the fire.

The stretch of road remains closed while fire crews bring in an excavator Petrik said.
