A 20-year-old man accused of killing a woman in her 50's has been formally charged in a Guelph court.

Mohammad Mohammadi appeared through a video link from the Guelph police station Wednesday afternoon at the Ontario Court of Justice on Wyndham Street. He is charged with second-degree murder.

The name of the victim has not been released.

The appearance lasted about 20 minutes. The hearing is under a publication ban.

The victim's body was found at a motel on Woodlawn Road by emergency services on Oct. 15.

Police say it took two days for the results of a post-mortem examination to come back. The exam results determined the death to be a homicide.

Mohammadi was arrested Tuesday evening. Police say the victim and accused were known to each other.

He is due back in court Friday.
