A Guelph man has been arrested in relation to an August incident in which a police cruiser was rammed with a stolen van.

On Aug. 17 police received a complaint about a van being driven recklessly in the downtown area. Investigation revealed the 2009 Dodge Caravan was reported stolen.

As officers attempted to stop the van at Wellington Street East and Wyndham Street South the driver intentionally drove into the passenger side of the cruiser, police say. He then reversed over a traffic island and ran a red light at Wellington Street and Gordon Street, driving into oncoming traffic. Officers did not pursue in the interest of public safety. No injuries were reported.

The driver was identified through ongoing investigation and on Thursday was located downtown and arrested.

A 55-year-old Guelph man is charged with dangerous driving, flight from police, assault with a weapon, possessing stolen property and several Highway Traffic Act offences. He was held for a bail hearing.
