Arrest made in shooting investigation

On Nov. 24, 2019, the victim, a 24-year-old Guelph male and three other people were inside a residence located near the intersection of Speedvale Avenue East and Stevenson Street North in the City of Guelph. At approximately 9:45 p.m., the accused and another male (still unidentified) knocked on the door to the residence and were let in. An argument ensued and the accused shot the victim in the left thigh. The accused and the other male then fled the residence, leaving in a black Pontiac Torrent SUV.

The victim was eventually transported to the Guelph General Hospital for treatment for the serious but non-life threatening gunshot wound he sustained as a result of this incident. He was treated and released from hospital.

On Nov. 25, 2019, police located the black Pontiac Torrent parked in front of an apartment building located in the downtown core of the City of Guelph. The accused was arrested without incident when he left the building and returned to this vehicle. A search of the accused’s vehicle yielded a loaded .22 caliber Ruger semi-automatic pistol and ammunition, as well as crystal methamphetamine.

A 29-year-old Guelph male has been charged with:
    •    Assault with a weapon
    •    Utter threats to cause bodily harm
    •    Use firearm while committing an offence
    •    Careless use of a firearm
    •    Careless storage of a firearm and ammunition
    •    Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
    •    Unauthorized possession of a firearm
    •    Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition
    •    Possession of a firearm contrary to prohibition order
    •    Possession of crystal methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking
    •    Breach Probation (two counts)

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing on Nov. 26, 2019.
