Two men were arrested Thursday for allegedly trying to open a fraudulent bank account.

Guelph police were called in the afternoon to a bank in the city’s south end. Staff were suspicious of identity documents presented by two men attempting to open an account.

Officers arrived and determined their true identities did not match the name on the documents being used. They were arrested, and a search incident to arrest revealed several documents in a different incorrect name.

A 48-year-old man from Niagara on the Lake and a 35-year-old man from Markham are jointly charged with uttering a forged document, possessing an identity document, identity fraud, identity theft and attempt fraud over $5,000. The Markham man also faces two additional counts of possessing an identity document.
