Business owner wrestles with man threatening him with baton

A second business owner came to his assistance and helped disarm and restrain the man for police

A Guelph male faces charges after a downtown business owner was reportedlyh threatened with a collapsible baton Sunday morning.

A business owner was opening his business about 8:30 a.m. when he observed a male overturning a large garbage container onto the road. The male saw he was being watched and approached the merchant while yelling at him. The male approached the victim then pulled the baton from his pocket and began waving it at the victim.

The victim attempted to disarm the male, which caused both to fall to the ground in a struggle for the weapon before another business owner intervened and seized the baton.

Guelph Police Service officers arrived on scene a short time later and arrested the male. There were no injuries reported.

An 18-year-old Guelph male is charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering threats. He was held for a bail hearing and ultimately released to appear in court July 27, 2021.
