Crime Stoppers tips led to sharp rise in arrests, drug seizures and property recoveries in 2021

Overall number of tips down by 15 per cent in Guelph, Wellington
arrest

There was a dip in the number of anonymous tips received by Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington (CSGW) last year, but the quantity of resulting arrests and charges more than doubled.

In addition, the value of drugs seized “skyrocketed.”

“These numbers are incredible, and I don’t say that lightly,” said Sarah Bowers-Peter, program coordinator for CSGW, in a news release. “They tell us that even though the overall volume of tips may be lower, the quality of the tips is very high.

“We’ll take quality over quantity any day."

The number of tips received fell by 15 per cent in 2021 compared to the year prior, but those they resulted in 13 cases being solved (up from eight), with 17 arrests (up from seven) and 76 charges laid (up from 33).

Police also seized an estimated $500,000 worth of drugs as a result of CSGW tips last year, a huge jump from 2020’s $20,505. Nearly $110,000 in personal property, including cash, was also recovered, up from the $50,765 recovered the year prior.
