Downtown altercation leads to assault charge

A Guelph man was charged with assault after an altercation in a downtown parking lot early Sunday.

Approximately 12:40 a.m. an adult male was in the Macdonell Street parking lot when he attempted to intervene in a verbal altercation, report Guelph police. He was approached by several unknown parties, one of whom punched him in the face.

Officers located the victim bleeding extensively from the nose and arrested the assailant, who was still on scene. A 26-year-old man is charged with assault. He was held for a bail hearing and has been released to appear in court.
