A Guelph female faces impaired driving charges after crashing into a hydro pole Saturday night and then driving home.

Approximately 11 p.m. a witness called police to report a vehicle being driven erratically on Laird Road near Southgate Drive. The witness briefly lost sight of the vehicle, and when they saw it again it had sustained heavy front-end damage from veering off the road and colliding with a pole.

The witness continued to follow the vehicle until it turned into a private driveway in the area of Gordon Street and Clairfields Drive East. Officers arrived moments later and saw the female driver exiting the heavily-damaged vehicle. She had a strong odour of alcoholic beverage on her breath and was showing signs of impairment including slurred speech and bloodshot eyes.

The female was arrested and taken to the Guelph police station where breath tests revealed she had well more than double the legal limit of alcohol in her system.

A 28-year-old Guelph female is charged with operation while impaired, operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration, failing to remain at a collision, novice driver having alcohol in their system and failing to comply with a stay-at-home order under the Reopening Ontario Act.

She will appear in a Guelph court May 11. Her driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and her vehicle was impounded for seven days.
