Guelph police arrested a man for reportedly threatening a young child with a hatchet on Sunday night.

Approximately 6:15 p.m. police were called to a townhouse complex in the west end. Witnesses reported a man removed a hatchet from his car and approached a playground area where he brandished the hatchet while yelling at a small child. It is not believed they are known to each other.

Officers located the man sitting in his car. While speaking to him they observed signs of impairment, including slurred speech and an odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath. He was asked to provide a breath sample and refused.

A 37-year-old man is charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, impaired operation and refusing a breath sample. He was held for a bail hearing Monday.
