Guelph police is getting $200,000 from the province as part of an annual grant program to expand video surveillance programs.

The $2.8 million investment in the closed circuit television (CCTV) program will see money go to 24 different police services in Ontario.

Money from the program can be spent on things like replacing outdated equipment, expanding or enhancing technology or installing new surveillance cameras "where gun and gang violence, illegal drug activity and human trafficking are prevalent."

"CCTV surveillance systems are an important part of local police work to detect, prevent, and deter criminal activity," solicitor general Michael Kerzner said in a news release.

"The systems also enhance police efforts to investigate crimes and provide evidence necessary to lay charges."
