Guelph Police says an alert bystander may have helped to avert a tragedy on Tuesday when he reported about a dozen youths skating on a pond that was not completely frozen.

A 54-year-old man from Guelph-Eramosa Township called Guelph Police Service at about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday after he observed approximately a dozen youths skating on a stormwater management pond on Watson Parkway North near Grange Road.

A sign at the scene, posted by the City of Guelph, specifically bans skating, swimming and fishing in the pond.

When police responded a short time later the youths were still on the pond and the officer reported hearing the sound of cracking ice while on scene.

All youths were safely moved off of the ice.
