Two motorists face impaired driving charges following separate collisions Saturday.

Just before 4 a.m. police were called to the Wilson Street parking garage after a bylaw officer found a vehicle crashed against the exit gate with the driver slumped over behind the wheel. Officers woke the male and immediately detected a strong odour of alcohol on his breath.

When asked to turn off the vehicle the male instead turned on the windshield wipers and turn signals. When asked where he was the male believed he was at home. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests revealed he had more than three times the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Just after 5 p.m. Saturday, police were notified of a collision at Wellington Street East and Neeve Street. One of the involved drivers said the other had a strong odour of alcohol on his breath and when he learned police had been called he drove away.

Officers located him a short distance away and noted signs of impairment. He was arrested and transported to the police station and also found to have more than three times the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 60-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.

Both drivers had their licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. Both were released with upcoming court dates.
