A Guelph man faces impaired driving charges after reversing into a Guelph police cruiser during a traffic stop Wednesday evening, report police.

Approximately 8:50 p.m. an officer was on patrol downtown when he observed a vehicle which appeared to have no mufflers. The vehicle was pulled over in the area of Baker Street and Quebec Street. After coming to a stop, the driver put the vehicle in reverse and struck the cruiser, which had its emergency lights activated.

Both vehicles sustained minor damage.

While speaking to the driver, the officer noted an odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath and several empty beer cans inside the car. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where testing confirmed he had more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 33-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court June 21.
