The threat of pending arrest couldn’t keep an impaired driver awake early Tuesday morning.

In the midst of their investigation, officers returned to the vehicle to find the driver asleep and hunched over the steering wheel, says a Guelph Police news release.

Police saw a vehicle run a stop sign at Delaware and Brant avenues in the city’s north end at about 2:20 a.m., followed by erratic driving, brushing against the curb and swerving quickly around parked vehicles, the release explains.

When officers pulled the vehicle over, they detected signs of driver impairment including laboured movements, droopy eyes and excessive sweating. Police returned to their cruiser to run the driver’s licence through their system and, upon returning to the stopped vehicle, found the driver asleep.

During a search following arrest, police uncovered 13.66 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine.

A 23-year-old Kitchener man is charged with impaired driving and possession of a controlled substance.
