Five Guelph men face impaired driving charges after being stopped by police during the long weekend, including two who were pulled over just a minute apart.

“Each of the accused males had their driver’s licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded for seven days,” states a Guelph police news release.

The first incident happened Friday evening, after two men were seen leaving a licenced establishment on Woodlawn Road East and getting into a vehicle.

The driver has an odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath and testing showed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system, according to a police news release.

A 48-year-old man was arrested.

Shortly after midnight on Saturday, an officer patrolling in the area of Eramosa Road and Woolwich Street clocked a vehicle travelling 86 km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone and pulled over the driver.

After failing a roadside test, a man was taken to the police station where additional tests reportedly confirmed the man had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system to drive.

A 40-year-old man was arrested.

At about 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, police responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Surrey and Gordon streets. Officers were told one of the drivers left the scene after giving the other driver their phone number.

As a result, police attended an Edinburgh Road South address and spoke with  the man, who reportedly showed “obvious signs of impairment.”

A 27-year-old man was charged with impaired driving, failing to stop at a collision, driving while suspended, careless driving and breach of probation.

Just after 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, police stopped a vehicle on Wellington Street West. The officer detected a strong odour of cannabis inside the vehicle, as well as the smell of alcoholic beverage on the driver’s breath, the news release explains.

An open package of cannabis gummies was also seen inside the vehicle.

Breath tests later confirmed the driver had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 38-year-old man was charged with impaired driving and having cannabis readily available to a driver.

Less than a minute later, an officer pulled over a vehicle after it was seen “parked erratically” at a Clair Road East business. A man was also seen getting into the vehicle with a bottle of alcohol, say police.

Breath tests reportedly confirmed the driver had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 52-year-old man, who is employed as a truck driver, was charged with impaired driving.

“The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly,” the release adds. “Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home.

“Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.”
