Male charged with impaired after car reportedly strikes pedestrian

In a separate incident, police say an alleged impaired driver had four times the legal amount of alcohol in his system

A Guelph driver was charged with impaired driving Sunday evening after a pedestrian was reportedly clipped by a vehicle downtown.

The victim reported he was standing beside his vehicle on Baker Street approximately 8:25 p.m. when he was struck by the side mirror of a passing car. The victim yelled at the driver, who fled the scene. The victim was not injured.

Officers located the involved vehicle in the parking garage of a downtown apartment building and noted scuff marks on the mirror. The registered owner was located and was observed to have an odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath and glossy eyes. He was arrested and taken to the police station, where testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 59-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation and failing to stop at a collision and his driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days. He will appear in a Guelph court Feb. 22.

The male was one of two arrested for impaired driving in Guelph over the weekend.

On Friday afternoon, just before 3 p.m., a citizen called police to report a possible impaired driver in the area of Speedvale Avenue West and Lewis Road. The caller advised they had seen the vehicle swerving, hitting the curb and making wide turns.

Guelph Police Service officers located the vehicle in a parking lot and immediately noticed obvious signs of impairment. The driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where testing revealed the male had more than four times the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 33-year-old Kitchener male is charged with impaired driving. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 14 days. He will appear in a Guelph court Feb. 22.
