A pedestrian was allegedly assaulted by a skateboarder in an unprovoked attack Thursday, report Guelph police.

They say that just before 9 a.m., a man was walking in the area of Woolwich Street and Clarke Street East when he saw a man approaching on a skateboard. In order to provide space for the skateboarder to pass the man stepped into the bicycle lane to go around him.

The victim was then approached from behind and punched in the side of the face, causing him to fall to the ground. A description of the assailant was provided and a short time later officers located him on Woodlawn Road East. During a search incident to arrest officers located a knife with a 10cm blade hanging on a lanyard around his neck.

The victim and assailant are not known to each other and the victim reported no interaction between them before the assault. The victim sustained minor injuries but did not require medical treatment.

A 30-year-old Guelph man was arrested for assault, carrying a concealed weapon and breaching probation. He will appear in a Guelph bail court March 15.
