A 30-year-old Guelph man faces an assault with a weapon charge after a taxi driver was stabbed in the arm early Wednesday.

Police were called to the downtown area at about 3:40 a.m. and spoke with the victim, explains a Guelph Police news release.

The taxi driver told officers he picked up a male from the south end who requested to go downtown. During the trip the male made “bizarre comments” and when the cab stopped on Macdonell Street, the driver was stabbed in the upper arm with a small knife, the release states.

The driver then jumped out of the taxi, which rolled forward and struck a bike rack causing about $2,000 damage, as the passenger fled on foot.

Police say the suspect was found and arrested a short distance away.

The victim sustained a small laceration but did not seek medical treatment.

In addition to the weapon charge, the accused faces one count of transportation fraud.
