A Guelph man spent a night behind bars after kicking a Guelph police officer following a dispute at a downtown business Sunday afternoon.

Police were called to the business in the area of Wellington Street East and Gordon Street approximately 3:30 p.m. The man had allegedly taken items from the business but staff did not wish to pursue charges and instead were asking to have the man removed from the premises.

The man went outside with officers, where he banged several times on a cruiser and then kicked one of the officers in the shin. The officer was not injured.

A 26-year-old is charged with assault police. He was held for a bail hearing Monday.
