A Kitchener male faces a robbery charge after stealing a cash register from a business which was open Monday and then smashing it open in the parking lot as staff watched.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. a male entered a business on Silvercreek Parkway North near Woodlawn Road West. He forced himself past a barrier which separates customers from cashiers and approached a cashier while demanding she open the register. When the employee froze in fear, the male pushed past her and forcefully pulled the whole register off the counter.

He carried the register out to the parking lot where he smashed it on the ground causing the cash drawer to open. The male removed the cash from the drawer and was observed by staff running toward a nearby hotel.

Guelph police surrounded the hotel, and approximately three hours later were finally able to take the male into custody.

A 36-year-old male is charged with robbery, mischief under $5,000 and breach of probation. He was held for a bail hearing Tuesday.
