Guelph police have completed an investigation into threats written this week on the wall of a school bathroom and determined no charges will be laid.

A 17-year-old male was arrested Tuesday and cautioned for mischief and uttering threats. Officers used their discretion and referred the youth to the John Howard Society’s pre-charge diversion program instead of laying criminal charges.

Police were called to the school in the area of College Avenue West and Janefield Avenue Monday afternoon, after school officials discovered a message written on a bathroom wall which threatened violence against students and teachers.

Two parties were identified through subsequent investigation. One 17-year-old male was questioned Tuesday morning and released without charges. A second 17-year-old male was questioned later in the day Tuesday and referred to the John Howard Society program. The program allows youthful offenders to avoid criminal charges if they take responsibility for their actions and complete a variety of tasks, which could include completing a program, volunteer work or a number of other sanctions.

Police do not believe there was ever any risk to the involved school community.
