Pair of impaired charges, including one where car ran into tree

A man faces impaired driving charges after a car collided with a tree Saturday evening, Guelph police report.

Approximately 6:30 p.m. police were called to Stevenson Street North at Brighton Street. Witnesses reported a vehicle had left the road and struck a tree and that the driver appeared to be unconscious.

Officers arrived to find a man unresponsive and the vehicle’s transmission still in Drive. He was removed from the vehicle showing obvious signs of impairment, and a search revealed a small amount of suspected blue fentanyl. He was transported to hospital for medical treatment.

A 26-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation and possessing a controlled substance.

A short time after that call, officers were dispatched to a business near Stone Road West and Scottsdale Drive. Witnesses had reported a man stumbling from a vehicle into a business.

The man was located approximately 7:20 p.m. showing signs of impairment. He registered a fail on a roadside device and was transported to the police station, where breath tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 61-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court May 12, 2023.
