Just before 8 a.m. on Sept. 18, a 19-year-old female was crossing from the east side of Gordon Street near Landsdown Drive and made it across four lanes of traffic before she was struck by a southbound Kia Sorento. The female was transported to hospital by ambulance to tend to injuries that fortunately were minor.

The female pedestrian was charged with failing to yield to traffic under the Highway Traffic Act.

The reality for driving and walking in the city is that there is always some type of road construction going on that creates challenges for all. This situation is heightened now that the school year has begun and everyone is trying to get where they need to go with more obstructions and distractions.

The Guelph Police Service wants to remind drivers of the need to be diligent in these areas, slow down and obey the signalmen that are working at them.

At the same time, pedestrians need to use designated crossovers to avoid unwanted interactions with vehicles travelling on the roadway where their focus is competing with other distractions.

Whether we are walking or driving, we all have a role to play in road safety.
