A Guelph man faces assault and weapons charges after a pellet gun was fired at officers investigating a motor vehicle collision downtown early Friday.
Shortly after 3 a.m., Guelph Police Service officers were investigating a single-vehicle collision on Woolwich Street near Eramosa Road. While an officer was speaking to a civilian tow truck driver, they heard what sounded like several shots from a pellet gun. A witness noticed a male standing on the roof of a nearby building holding what appeared to be a firearm.
More officers responded to the area and minutes later located a male climbing down an electrical pole holding a firearm, later determined to be an Airsoft 6 mm pellet gun. He was arrested at gunpoint. No injuries were reported.
Investigation revealed the male had been a passenger in the motor vehicle involved in the collision but fled before police arrived.
A 25-year-old Guelph male faces several charges including assault with a weapon, assault police, careless use of a firearm and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was held for a bail hearing Friday.
