Police apprehend accused racing driver after collision

TOWNSHIP OF GUELPH/ERAMOSA - On Monday June 18, 2018, at approximately 6:30 p.m., a Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was monitoring traffic on Highway 6, north of Guelph.

The officer observed a male driving an older black sedan at a speed that appeared to be well above the posted 80 km/h speed limit. The vehicle was locked on radar in excess of 140 km/h, exceeding the posted speed limit by at least 60 km/h.

The officer prepared to stop the speeder but the vehicle began to accelerate away, passing other traffic unsafely. Given the volume of traffic and high speeds, officers disengaged.

The male driver attempted to turn off the highway at the next intersection and lost control, nearly striking another motor vehicle before entering the ditch. No one was injured. Police came upon the crash and arrested the male.

A 17-year-old male, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act has been charged with Racing a Motor Vehicle and Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle and is scheduled to appear in Guelph Court on July 27, 2018. His driver's licence and vehicle were seized for a period of seven days as per statute.

TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON - On Sunday, June 17, 2018, at approximately 3 p.m., a Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was monitoring traffic on Second Line, south of Elora.

The officer observed a male driving a red passenger vehicle at a speed that appeared to be well above the posted 60 km/h speed limit. The vehicle was locked on radar in excess of 110 km/h, exceeding the posted speed limit by at least 50 km/h.

46-year-old Bradley MARTIN of Woolwich has been charged with Race a Motor Vehicle contrary to the Highway Traffic Act and is scheduled to appear in Guelph Provincial Court on August 1, 2018. His driver's licence and vehicle were seized for a period of seven days as per statute.
