A Guelph male faces impaired driving and drug charges after police say they twice saw him dozing off behind the wheel Wednesday.

Approximately 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, a Guelph Police Service officer observed the male slumped over at a green light at Wellington Street West and Dublin Street South. When another motorist honked their horn the male woke up and began driving.

The officer turned around to follow the male’s motor vehicle and at a red light at Gordon Street and Waterloo Avenue observed him to appear to fall asleep again. A traffic stop was conducted and the officer observed physical signs consistent with drug impairment. An officer trained in performing drug recognition evaluations formed grounds to believe the male was impaired by drugs. A urine sample was collected for further analysis.

During a search of the vehicle incident to arrest police found a baggie in the console containing suspected pink fentanyl.

A 36-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired operation by a drug and possessing a controlled substance. He will appear in a Guelph court October 12, 2021.
