Roadside 'altercation' results in impaired charge for Guelph driver

TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON - On May 1, 2018 at approximately 6:20 p.m. the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of an erratic driver on Highway 6 southbound near Sixth Line, Township of Centre Wellington. A second call advised that two drivers had pulled over and were having an altercation.

Police attended and while speaking with one of the drivers, formed the opinion that he was under the influence of alcohol. A roadside test was administered which resulted in a fail. He was arrested and transported to a local detachment for further testing.

Thirty-eight-year-old Gurdeep Chakkal of Guelph has been charged with driving with over 80 mgs of alcohol in 100mL of blood contrary to the Criminal Code. A 90-day administrative driver's licence suspension (A.D.L.S.) and seven-day vehicle impoundment was initiated as per statute. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on May 29, 2018 to answer to the charge.
