Seatbelt offence leads to drug charges for two youth

TOWNSHIP OF CENTRE WELLINGTON - On May 3, 2018 at approximately 10:30 a.m., members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped the driver of a sedan on Gartshore Street, Town of Fergus for a seat belt offence.

While speaking with the driver officers detected the strong odour of fresh marijuana coming from the vehicle. Officers then observed (suspected) marijuana in the vehicle. The driver and passenger were arrested. A search incident to arrest located multiple bags of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

An 18-year-old male from Nichol Township has been charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and is scheduled to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on June 5, 2018 to answer to the charge.

A 16-year-old male youth was charged and diverted.
