A Guelph man faces theft and obstruction charges after attempting to steal approximately $1,000 worth of sports cards.

Just before 11 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to a business on Woodlawn Road West. A loss prevention employee had confronted a man who left the store with product in his backpack.

Police arrived and the man removed several boxes of trading cards from his backpack. During the investigation, the man provided a false name. He was transported to the police station as efforts continued to determine his true identity. He finally identified himself after being told he would be held for a bail hearing the next day as police could not determine who he was.

A 35-year-old is charged with theft under $5,000 and obstructing police. He will appear in court Nov. 3.
