Seven impaired charges laid over long weekend

Guelph police report seven people were arrested for impaired driving in Guelph over the past few days.

- At 9:45 a.m. Friday, a witness called to report a vehicle being driven erratically on Woolwich Street. Officers located the vehicle running in a parking lot on Woodlawn Road West and noted the driver had a strong odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath. Testing at the police station confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol on his breath. A 32-year-old Guelph man was arrested for impaired driving.

- Just after 5 p.m. Saturday, a resident near Eastview Road and Mountford Drive reported her neighbour had hit her car and left the area. Officers attended and located the subject’s vehicle parked in the driveway with significant damage. A man exited the house to speak to officers and had a strong odour of alcoholic beverage on his breath.

He failed a roadside breath test and was transported to the police station where further testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system. A 71-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and failing to remain at a collision.

- Approximately 9 p.m. Saturday, an officer was on Applewood Crescent when she observed a vehicle being driven erratically, making repeated U-turns. The officer activated her emergency lights but the vehicle accelerated away and pulled into a private driveway. The female driver was spoken to and observed to have a strong odour of alcoholic beverage on her breath. A 19-year-old Guelph woman is charged with impaired driving and several provincial traffic offences.

- At 2:35 a.m. Sunday, police were conducting a RIDE spot check on Wellington Street East when they spoke to a driver who had an odour of alcoholic beverage on her breath. She failed a roadside breath test and was transported to the police station, where further testing confirmed she had more than the legal limit of alcohol in her system. A 31-year-old Waterloo woman is charged with impaired driving.

- At 7 p.m. Sunday, police were called to a collision on Gordon Street near Arkell Road. Officers spoke to a driver who had rear-ended a stopped vehicle and noted alcohol on his breath. He was transported to the police station where tests confirmed he had more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system. A 54-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and careless driving.

- Just before 5:30 a.m. Monday, police were called to the area of Edinburgh Road North and Paisley Street for reports of a driver passed out in a running vehicle. Officers attended and initially had difficulty waking the man, who was showing obvious signs of impairment. A 23-year-old Cambridge man is charged with impaired driving.

- At 5:11 p.m. Monday, police were notified of a possible impaired driver in the area of Victoria Road North and Brant Avenue. The involved vehicle was located and stopped on Eramosa Road and the driver found to be showing obvious signs of impairment. A 46-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.
