Shoplifting call leads to rash of charges

In addition to stolen items, police found fentanyl and a spring-loaded knife

A Guelph man and woman face several charges after police responded Saturday to a reported shoplifting.

Approximately 4:30 p.m. police were called to a business on Silvercreek Parkway North where staff had recognized two people involved in a previous theft. As officers were arriving they observed the pair pushing a cart loaded with more than $1,200 in property from the store. Both attempted to flee on foot but were arrested following a short foot pursuit.

During searches incident to arrest police located more stolen property including perfume and clothing, as well as a several small baggies of suspected fentanyl and a spring-loaded knife.

A 36-year-old Guelph female and 34-year-old Guelph male face several charges including theft under $5,000, possessing controlled substances for the purpose of trafficking, carrying a concealed weapon and breaching court orders. They will both appear in bail court Tuesday.
