Shoplifter assaults security staff

Just before 7 p.m. on March 20, security staff at the Stone Road Mall approached a male that had been previously banned from property.

The male came to the attention of staff when he took merchandise from a store in the mall and left without paying. When security staff approached the male to apprehend him, he assaulted one of the security officers.

The security officer received minor injury from the assault.

Police arrived and the male was taken into custody.

During the search of the man, a quantity of a substance believed to be crystal methamphetamine was found and further investigation learned that he was also bound by a number of conditions from previous criminal charges.

The 21-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault, theft, possession of stolen property, two counts of breach of probation, drug possession and trespassing. He was held in custody to appear in bail court today.
