A Welland man was arrested on Boxing Day after an altercation with a downtown store owner.

Guelph Police report that on Saturday at 1:20 p.m., a man entered a Downtown Guelph store where an argument ensued with the male store owner regarding COVID-19 protocols. The male was given a bag of chips for free in exchange for him leaving the store.

At 1:22 p.m. the suspect returned to the store, walked behind the counter and began taking money out of the cash register. The owner attempted to push the male away, however the male ultimately pushed the owner away, took $100 and left the store.

On Sunday police located the person in downtown core and he was subsequently arrested. Upon arrest, the man provided a false name to police.

A 23-year-old Welland male has been charged with robbery and obstruct peace officer.

He will appear in court on April 23.
