A Guelph man faces charges after a stranger was stabbed in the back downtown early Monday.

Approximately 2 a.m. the adult male victim was downtown when another male approached and asked to walk with him. The pair had walked a short distance while making small talk when the male pulled a knife and stabbed the victim in the back near the waist.

A passerby called 911 and the victim was transported to Guelph General Hospital before being airlifted to a Hamilton trauma centre. He has since been released to continue recovering at home.

A 19-year-old Guelph male is charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats and two counts of breaching a probation order. He will appear in a Guelph bail court Wednesday.
