Thieves hug 70-year-old woman to steal her jewelry

Guelph police seek information on distraction theft of sentimental items. Victim pleads for their return

On July 26, 2019, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Guelph police were called to a south end grocery store where there was a report of a theft. Police discovered that this was in regard to a distraction theft that happened in the area.

The 70-year-old victim was approached by two individuals, who asked if she knew were the hospital was. The victim then engaged in conversation with the two suspects.

At the end of the conversation, the female suspect gave the victim a hug. At this time, the female put fake jewellery around the victim’s neck and stole her real jewellery.

The jewellery stolen is described as “solid gold” chains, one with a gold crucifix and one with a Mother Mary medallion. This jewellery is extremely sentimental to the victim as these necklaces and pendants were given to her by her husband, who is now deceased. The victim is pleading with the suspects to get the jewellery back to her.

There are two suspects in this incident. The first one is described as male, south Asian, middle aged, heavy build, with black hair and a black beard. The second one is described as female, south Asian, middle aged, heavy build with black shoulder length hair.
