Three charged in unrelated shoplifting incidents

In one case, police say a 31-year-old Guelph man changed into clothing in a store bathroom and left without paying for the items

On March 19, 2020 at 10:45 p.m., police were dispatched to a store located near the intersection of Woodlawn Road West and Woolwich Street in the City of Guelph. The store’s loss prevention officer had observed an adult male [allegedly] place multiple food items and electronics in his backpack. He then selected multiple items of clothing, attended to the washroom, changed into the clothing he just removed from the racks and placed his initial clothing in the washroom garbage. The loss prevention officer confronted the male after he left the store and a physical altercation ensued. The male was able to break free and fled.

At 10:52 p.m., police located the male as he was attempting to hide in the parking lot shopping cart storage and he was subsequently arrested.

Further investigation revealed that the male was also wanted on warrant from the Ontario Provincial Police in regards to the charge of break and enter with intent.

A 31-year-old Guelph male has been additionally charged with:
    •    Theft under $5,000
    •    Escape lawful custody

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing on March 20.

As a result of the physical altercation, the loss prevention officer sustained a cut on the bridge of his nose as well as scratch marks on the right side of his neck, and was transported to the Guelph General Hospital for treatment.

On March 18, 2020 at 9:26 p.m., police were dispatched to a store located near the intersection of Woodlawn Road West and Woolwich Street in the City of Guelph. The store’s loss prevention officer had just observed an adult male [allegedly] place $44.88 worth of various pieces of merchandise in to a backpack and then leave the store.

Earlier in the day, [it is alleged that] the male has also shoplifted a blender and a gift bag valued at $203.99 from the store.

At 9:31p.m., police located the male hiding in a bushed area near the edge of the property and he was subsequently arrested.

A search incident to arrest revealed that the male was also in possession of $332.86 worth of stolen property from another store in the same commercial plaza.

A 37-year-old Guelph male has been charged with:
    •    Theft under $5,000 x2
    •    Possession of stolen property
    •    Breach probation

He will appear in court on May 29.

On March 10, 2020, an adult female failed to attend court in regards to the following charges:
    •    Theft under $5,000
    •    Possession of property obtained by crime

On March 19 at 8:59 p.m., [it is alleged that] the loss prevention officer of a store located near the intersection of Woodlawn Road West and Woolwich Street in the City of Guelph caught the female shoplifting $299.80 worth of cosmetics. She concealed the cosmetics in her purse and then left the store without paying.

At 9:26 p.m., police arrived at the scene and arrested the female.

A 35-year-old Guelph female has been additionally charged with:
    •    Theft under $5,000
    •    Fail to appear in court

She will appear in court on June 2.
