Guelph Police Service dealt with 787 calls for service over the weekend

The following news releases were issued today by the Guelph Police Service:

Weapon - arrest
On July 1, 2018 at approximately 10:30 a.m., Guelph Police were called to the area of Metcalfe Street and Speedvale Avenue for several reports of a male carrying a handgun while walking down the street and yelling. It is alleged that the male was pointing the handgun at himself and members of the public passing by in their cars.

Police attended and located a male matching the description on Philip Avenue at Delhi Street. The male was taken into custody without incident. A plastic toy gun that had been painted black was recovered from the ground nearby.

As a result, a 35-year-old Guelph male was arrested and charged with Weapons Dangerous and Common Nuisance contrary to the Criminal Code. The male was held in custody for a bail hearing.

Multiple break and enters - male arrested
On June 30, 2018 at approximately 3 a.m., Guelph Police were called to a residence on Applewood Crescent for a report of a break and enter in progress. It is alleged that the suspect was confronted by the homeowner and fled on foot with stolen items. Police located and arrested the male a short distance from the residence. Further investigation revealed that multiple residences had been broken into on the same street.

A 43-year-old Guelph male was charged with break and enter and commit (x3), break and enter with intent, possession of stolen property (x2), breach of probation and fail to appear.

Police investigation revealed that the male was also (allegedly) responsible for an earlier incident on June 29, 2018. On this occasion, Guelph Police were called to a business on Silvercreek Parkway North for a report of a theft. It is alleged that a male posed as a repair man, entered the business and gained access to the back office. The male stole multiple items from the business, including electronics and money.

Through investigation, police were able to identify the male. The 43-year-old Guelph male was additionally charged with theft under $5,000 (x3) and mischief under $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing.  

Foot pursuit - escape lawful custody - arrest
On July 2, 2018 at approximately 2:32 p.m., Guelph Police conducted a traffic stop on Victoria Street South. A male in the passenger seat was spoken to and police investigation found that he was wanted. The young male was then asked to exit the vehicle, as he was under arrest. As the young male exited the vehicle, he fled on foot resulting in a foot pursuit. The young male was captured by a fleet footed officer on Elizabeth Street and placed under arrest.

A 17-year-old Guelph male was charged with escape lawful custody and fail to comply with undertaking. He was held for a bail hearing.

Stolen property - male arrested
On June 28, 2018, Guelph Police attended a gas station on York Road for a report of a stolen cellphone. It was alleged that a male used the washroom to refill a water bottle and stole a cellphone on his way out.

On June 29, 2018 at approximately 6:40 a.m., while on routine patrol, the male was located at the bus terminal on MacDonell Street in possession of the stolen cellphone. A 27-year-old Guelph male was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000. Further investigation revealed that the male was breaching his probation order and as a result, he was also charged with breach of probation. He was held for a bail hearing.

Taxi fare disputes - arrests
On June 30, 2018 at approximately 2:20 p.m. while on routine patrol, Guelph Police observed a dispute between a male and a taxi driver in the area of Victoria Road North and Woodlawn Road East. The male was unable to pay his fare to the full amount. Investigation revealed that the male was (allegedly) intoxicated. As a result, a 38-year-old Guelph male was arrested and charged with public intoxication and was transported back to the Guelph Police Station.

On June 29, 2018 at approximately 3 p.m., Guelph Police were called to Gordon Street for a report of a dispute between a male and taxi driver in regard to fare payment. The male had used the taxi service but refused to pay his fare. As a result, a 22-year-old Guelph male was arrested and charged with obtain transportation by fraud and breach of probation (x2). He was held for a bail hearing.

Motor vehicle collision - property damage
On June 29, 2018 at approximately 1:05 p.m., Guelph Police were called to a business on Silvercreek Parkway North for a report of a single-vehicle motor vehicle collision. The driver, a 39-year-old Guelph male, ran his vehicle into the business, causing damage to both the building and the vehicle. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. The collision is still under investigation.

Unlicensed driver and possession of controlled substance
On June 29, 2018 at approximately 11:20 p.m. while on routine patrol, Guelph Police Bike Patrol observed a female known to him as an unlicensed driver operating a motor vehicle.

Hope Leroy, a 24-year-old Guelph female, was arrested and charged with driving while under suspension, fail to surrender insurance card and drive motor vehicle - no currently validated permit. Investigation found that the female was also in possession of a controlled substance, which is believed to be fentanyl, resulting in an additional charge of possession of a controlled substance. Leroy is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 7, 2018.

Drug possession - male arrested
On June 29, 2018 at approximately 2:50 p.m. while on routine patrol, Guelph Police located a male in possession of drugs, which is believed to be hash, on Elizabeth Street. A 44-year-old Guelph male was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and breach of probation (x2). He was held for a bail hearing.

Fighting in park
On June 30, 2018 at approximately 12:55 p.m., Guelph Police were called to Royal City Park for a report of a male attempting to fight people in the park. Investigation revealed that the male had (allegedly) been drinking at the park and that he was intoxicated.

As a result, a 57-year-old Guelph male was arrested and charged with public intoxication and was transported to the Guelph Police Station.  

Break and enter - business ransacked
On July 2, 2018 at approximately 1:20 p.m., Guelph Police were called to a business on Kortright Road West for a report of a break and enter. The culprit(s) entered sometime over the weekend, ransacked the business and stole a charitable donation box of money.

Impaired driving - arrests
On July 1, 2018 at approximately 1:56 p.m., Guelph Police responded to a call from a concerned citizen in regards to a driver allegedly drinking in his vehicle while driving on Gordon Street and Heritage Drive. Police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on Stone Road. As a result, a 36-year-old Guelph male was given a three-day licence suspension and his vehicle was towed.

On July 2, 2018 at approximately 12:15 a.m., Guelph Police responded to a call from a concerned citizen in regards to a potentially impaired driver on Silvercreek Parkway South. The citizen advised police that a male had recently been escorted out of a licensed establishment and was sitting in the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle. Police arrived and located the male in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. As a result, a 33-year-old Guelph male was arrested and charged with impaired driving - care and control. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 17, 2018.
