Traffic stop, door to door sales, calls for service

The following are news releases issued by the Guelph Police Service:
At approximately 10:45 a.m. on Nov. 6, police stopped a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up in the area of Stone Road East that had expired validation on its licence plate. Investigation revealed that the driver was suspended and also in breach of conditions imposed by the court as a result of previous charges.

A 42-year-old Elmira resident was charged with four counts of breach of recognizance, two counts of driving while suspended and improper plate validation.  He was held in custody to appear in bail court.

Yesterday police received information from residence in the Village by the Arboretum about persons, apparently from the Ontario Energy Board going door to door trying to get information to sign people up for subsidies. The people were not wearing any company identification.

At the time of this report,  it could not confirmed if these people were legitimate employees, but there are always certain steps people can take to protect themselves from would -be fraudsters who show up unannounced at your door :

  • Don’t feel obligated to invite people you don’t into your home – speak to them through your front door
  • All legitimate sales persons will have clearly visible identification and will produce it when asked
  • Never give personal information to anyone or show them any documents with information about you or your accounts - if there are forms to be filled out, take them to be read at your own leisure to be returned later.
  • Always take the time to consider what is being offered – reputable business will avoid high pressure sales tactics – you don’t have to decide right then and there
  • Reputable canvassers will provide contact information for you to follow-up and make appointments at a future date
  • If you’re just not sure – say no thanks and close the door.
