A 19-year-old Guelph woman now faces four counts of assaulting police following a Tuesday incident.

In a news release, Guelph Police explains officer were dispatched to assist Guelph Wellington Paramedic Service personnel on Cardigan Street at about 10:45 p.m. Paramedics were dealing with an “argumentative” crying woman who showed signs of impairment sitting in the middle of the road.

Officers recognized the woman as someone who, less than an hour earlier, had been found sleeping on a Downtown sidewalk and driven home.

“Officers felt the female was not able to care for herself and she was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place,” states the release. “She continued to be verbally abusive and struggle, and once placed in the cruiser turned and kicked one of the officers in the abdomen.”

The officer was not injured.

Investigation revealed the woman already had three outstanding charges of assaulting police related to two prior incidents. On Tuesday she was charged with a fourth count, as well as public intoxication.
