MINTO - Domm Construction has been contracted to do the expansion enhancement project of the Palmerston arena and ball field for $2,034,589.

At the Dec. 21 council meeting, council approved the tender of the company for the project which includes the renovation of existing, and construction of additional, arena dressing rooms; the upgrade of the LED lighting at the ball diamond; and the creation of a third baseball diamond with backstop fencing and stone dust for the total price of $2,034,589.00 plus tax.

“The work on the new diamond began this fall to create an opportunity for it to be playable in 2022. Locates were secured to allow for excavation of the infield area and installation of poles for the backstop fence in November,” said Matthew Lubbers, director of community services.

The lump sum price submitted by Domm Construction Ltd. of $2,034,589, which falls below the initial project budget of $2,100,000.

In 2019, council directed staff to apply for the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) – Community, Culture and Recreation grant stream. The town was given a $1.7 million grant from the ICIP.

“We want to maintain and enhance recreation opportunities in order to increase physical literacy and abilities using existing well maintained parks and facilities to benefit persons of all ages,” explained Lubbers.

“We also want to ensure the location, supply and availability of major facilities considering the cost as well as community development benefits, which is why we’re doing this enhancement project.”

Construction will begin in April 2022 and will substantially be completed by September.
