The case of a Guelph Police officer charged with assault made its first appearance in a Guelph court Tuesday morning.

Sergeant Rodney Cox faces one count of assault causing bodily harm in relation to an incident that happened outside a Carden Street apartment building at 3 a.m. on Feb. 4.

An interaction with a 45-year-old man led to the man being taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Cox was charged following an investigation by the province's Special Investigations Unit.

Cox was not in court for Monday's first appearance. An agent for his lawyer, Joanne Mulcahy of Toronto, conducted the brief hearing.

The Crown attorney referred to the matter as a "highly sensitive file" before it was put over until Aug. 13 in order for the Crown to provide defence with full disclosure regarding the matter.

Cox is currently on administrative leave from the force.
