On the morning of Jan. 9, 2020, Guelph Police Service School Safety officers participated in the walking school bus at Mitchell Woods Public School in the City of Guelph. They were joined by seven children, a parent and two dogs.

The initiative was started by the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Active and Safe Routes to School Committee. The program is supported by Wellington‐Dufferin Student Transportation Services (STWDSTS), in collaboration with Wellington‐Dufferin‐Guelph Active and Safe Routes to School (WDGASRTS) agencies, Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB), Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB), Wellington‐Dufferin‐Guelph Public Health and the City of Guelph.

There are three schools participating in the project, Mitchell Woods Public School, Ken Danby Public School and Holy Trinity Catholic School. School Safety officers participated in a walk with every school in the fall and will be joining them again in the winter months. It is a wonderful program for students to set healthy habits, relieve traffic congestion, learn safe routes to school, traffic safety and develop new friendships!

The Guelph Police Service would like to remind the public to be extra careful when driving in school zones, especially at the start and end of the school day.
