A Guelph man arrested Tuesday morning for stealing mail remains in custody after officers discovered he was also wanted in connection with a violent robbery a week earlier.

About 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, police were called to the area of Essex Street and Dublin Street South for a report of a male going along the street removing items from mailboxes. Police located and detained the male, and a search of his person revealed several cheques and health cards in various names.

A search of police records revealed the male was also wanted for robbery and aggravated assault in connection with an incident Jan. 11. On that morning, about 3:40 a.m., police located a male lying on a sidewalk on Carden Street near Wyndham Street North suffering from a head injury.

The victim reported he had been robbed inside a nearby apartment unit and beaten with metal pipes.

A 34-year-old Guelph male is charged with robbery, aggravated assault, uttering threats, possession of property obtained by crime and two counts of breach of probation. He was held for a bail hearing on Friday.

A 37-year-old Guelph male was earlier arrested in relation to the robbery and remains in custody. His next court date is January 29.
