An angry driver was arrested Sunday after police say he threatened to kill one pedestrian then assaulted a second who tried to intervene.

Guelph Police say that on Sunday around 9:21 p.m., an adult male was driving near the intersection of Stone Road West and Scottsdale Drive when he became agitated at an unknown man crossing the street in front of him.

The driver then allegedly threatened to kill the pedestrian, drove towards oncoming traffic, pulled a u-turn and confronted the man in a nearby commercial parking lot.

As he repeatedly yelled at the man that he was going to kill him, a second unknown man intervened in the altercation, placing himself in between the male and the first pedestrian. The driver then punched the second man approximately seven or eight times in the head, and proceeded back to his vehicle.

The second man followed him and attempted to take a picture of his license plate. Police say the driver then reversed his vehicle into the second victim, striking him with the rear passenger bumper, and drove away. The Guelph Police Service was contacted for assistance.

The second man sustained bruising and a small laceration to his face.

A short time later, police located the male driving near the intersection of Stone Road West and Gordon Street, and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The male refused to stop and ran a red light. The pursuit was terminated due to a concern for public safety.

At 9:54 p.m., police found the male in a residential parking lot located near the intersection of Woolwich Street and Speedvale Avenue West. After a brief struggle, he was ultimately arrested.

A 42-year-old Guelph man was charged with:

- Assault

- Assault with a weapon

- Utter threats to cause death

- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

- Flight from police

- Resist arrest

His vehicle was also seized.

He was held in custody pending a Monday bail hearing.
