Guelph police laid four impaired driving charges this weekend, with several other charges laid as well.

During a RIDE spotcheck, officers spoke with a Waterloo man in the area of Silvercreek Parkway South and Waterloo Avenue who showed signs of impairment, explains a Guelph Police Service news release, adding testing revealed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 28-year-old man is charged with impaired driving.

During the spotcheck police also suspended four other drivers’ licences after they registered an “alert” on roadside screening devices, indicating a blood alcohol level between 50 and 100 mg in 100 ml of blood.

In addition, two novice drivers were cited with having alcohol in their system and another was charged with having marijuana readily available.

A Saturday night hit and run collision with a light pole led to charges for a 44-year-old Guelph man. At about 11:45 p.m. a concerned citizen saw a vehicle being driven erratically before it mounted a median and struck a light pole, causing significant damage to the vehicle.

The driver left the area and parked in a nearby private driveway, the news release explains.

Officers arrived at the home a few minutes later and detected a “strong odour of alcoholic beverage” on the driver’s breath and they showed signs of impairment.

Tests confirmed they had more than the legal amount of alcohol in their system.

Then on Sunday, at about 4:50 p.m. police went to an address in the area of Victoria Road North and Brant Avenue to speak with a male about an earlier driving complaint. While there, police reportedly saw the man drive onto the curb as he was arriving home, then exited the vehicle carrying an unopened bottle of vodka.

Officers “immediately” noted the smell of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, the release notes.

The suspect was taken to the police station, where tests revealed he had three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 40-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving.

Shortly before 3 a.m. on Monday, police stopped a vehicle travelling 120 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on Gordon Street, near Maltby Road. Police detected a “strong odour” of alcohol and observed an open bottle of rum behind the driver’s seat.

Testing revealed the driver had more than double the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

A 22-year-old Milton man is charged with impaired driving, as well as speeding, stunt driving and several other provincial offences.

Each of the accused impaired drivers received an automatic 90-day driver’s licence suspension and had their vehicle impounded for a week, in addition to charges laid. However, due to the additional charges, the Milton driver’s vehicle was impounded for two weeks.
