The jury selection process has begun for Aidan and Angus Kee, two Guelph brothers charged in the 2020 death of Nick Tanti.

Jury selection started Monday at the Superior Court of Justice in Guelph.

By 12:30 p.m. they had selected 13 of 14 jurors.

The trial is set to begin on Monday, May 16.

Aidan will be tried for second-degree murder. His brother Angus will be tried for unlawful act manslaughter and accessory after the fact manslaughter.

The two were initially charged with first-degree murder, but the charges were reduced after a preliminary inquiry.

Tanti was stabbed during an altercation in front of Tony's Billiards in downtown Guelph in February 2020. He was sent to hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

Previously, it was reported the trial would begin immediately after the jury was selected, but that was not the case.

Justice Gordon Lemon confirmed the trial will begin Monday, May 16. He expects it will take four to six weeks to complete.

There will be 14 members of the jury, but another 10 jurors will be selected into a secondary group in case someone is impacted by COVID-19 protocols.
