Refusing to leave a store’s bathroom Monday night led to several criminal charges for a Guelph male.

Shortly before 11 p.m., Guelph police were called to a business near Speedvale Avenue East and Stevenson Street North regarding a male who had been in the bathroom for more than two hours and was refusing to leave.

Police made verbal contact with the male who refused to come out. With staff’s permission officers forced the door open and arrested the male under the Trespass to Property Act for failing to leave a premises when directed.

The male was searched incident to arrest and officers located several allegedly stolen business cheques related to another ongoing investigation, as well as a small amount of suspected blue fentanyl.

Last Friday, police began investigating reports of a male attempting to cash cheques which had been stolen from a business on Speedvale Avenue West. The cheques as well as bank receipts for the failed transactions were located following the male’s arrest Monday night.

A 29-year-old Guelph male is charged with failing to leave when directed, possessing stolen property, possessing a controlled substance and four counts of fraud under $5,000.  He will appear in a Guelph court Sept. 17.
