Officers issue 39 tickets in 12 hours

Members of A Platoon as well as members of the Traffic Unit were out yesterday with targeted enforcement. Throughout the course of a 12-hour span beginning just after 6 a.m., 39 tickets were issued to drivers. Offences included speeding, stunt driving, expired val tags, and G1 drivers not accompanied by a properly licensed driver. Four distracted driving tickets were also issued.

Guelph Police would like to remind drivers that new distracted driving laws come into effect Jan. 1, 2019. Drivers convicted of distracted driving under the new laws will be punished with a licence suspension, a hefty fine and demerit points. The severity of the punishment increases with the number of subsequent offences committed:
    •    First offence: three days suspension and $1,000 fine
    •    Second offence: seven days suspension and $2,000 fine
    •    Three or more offences: 30 days suspension, $3,000 fine and six demerit points
